If there’s anyone out there who has never felt frustration, let the person stand up and be called a liar. Even God gets frustrated with us as we are all so demanding and do not heed His ways. Even animals and babies get frustrated so who are we adult humans to say we do not feel this emotion?
“Life is not an easy matter… You cannot live through it without falling into frustration and cynicism unless you have before you a great idea which raises you above personal misery, above weakness, above all kinds of perfidy and baseness.” Leon Tronsky
Frustration is part of life. As said in the first paragraph, everyone gets frustrated. Through frustration can we only obtain perserverance, patience, sympathy, pity, empathy and unconditional love. Frustration also helps us master skills and learn new things.
“People need trouble — a little frustration to sharpen the spirit on, toughen it. Artists do; I don’t mean you need to live in a rat hole or gutter, but you have to learn fortitude, endurance. Only vegetables are happy.” William Faulkner
Imagine how many things were created out of frustration. Take for example mechanised harvesting of grapes (for wine). It must have been that an enologist (wine maker) was frutstrated that hand picking took too long and the desired ripeness of the grape had passed when it had reached him for crushing. Mechanised harvesting helped the enologist be rid one frustration.
“Frustration is the wet nurse of violence.” David Abrahansen
How does frustration come about? To me, I understand that frustration occurs when one is hindered. When we are unable to do, get or understand something, be it tangible or intangible, ppl get frustrated. The inability to obtain, perform or understand acts as a hindering barrier to a person, be it physical or mental. In other words, frustration does also come about when we feel inadequate and at times useless to over come the situation or task. Frustration may lead to many other strong emotions such as anger, sadness, irritation and violence which may eventually lead to heinous crimes. On this note, frustration can be dangerous on extreme levels.
“Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion… I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.” Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Frustration exists in all our beings but to what extent does this frustration exist in us is an important matter. Like a soda can or bottle, frustration is the pressure in us that can make us explode like a shaken soda can or bottle when opened. How we curb and overcome it or how we let it out is also rather important. Some ppl require time, some laugh, some exercise, some eat, some drink, some cry, etc. Different ppl deal differently from others. In the end, we just have to be respective of the person’s choice panacea.
“Our frustration is greater when we have much and want more than when we have nothing and want some. We are less dissatisfied when we lack many things than we seem to lack but one thing.” Eric Hoffer
Sometimes we feel this emotion because we want something better for us and/or our loved ones. For example – It is not wrong for parents to feel frustrated because they’re unable to better understand their child. Often it is the ppl we know who cause us to feel frustration rather than our enemies or ppl we dispise. It is a funny thought at that but I guess there’s a price to pay for allowing someone to share your circle.
“Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you’ll understand what little chance you have in trying to change others.” Jacob Braude
Perhaps we should look upon ourselves when we feel frustration. We should not always look to blame others for making us feel frustrated. Perhaps we misunderstand something of the situation or are unable to empathise. Whatever the reason it maybe, we should self-analyse of how could we avoid frustration when next we encounter it. Try a different approach to the situation or talk things out. When all else fails… Either pray or walk away or let sleeping dogs lie for the moment before readdressing the issue.
“All that is necessary to break the spell of inertia and frustration is to — act as if it were impossible to fail.” Dorothy Brande
